All around the world breast cancer continues to be the most common type of tumor among women.
If you are affected by this cancer there are a couple things, we would like you to know.
First: You are not alone, even if you are not a Dr. Oscar Porras-Escorcia patient you can always seek guidance and clear any doubts you could have in a walk-in consultation.
Most of the time, the treatment for breast cancer involves a mastectomy or removal of a breast, this steps you into a journey of self-acceptance and an effort of reconstruction after winning against death to restore the breast it was lost and to recover your femininity, your self-image, and your psychological wellness.
Dr Oscar Porras will guide you step by step in the 2 modalities he has to reconstruct your breast: immediate reconstruction or two-steps reconstruction.
If you are a candidate for immediate reconstruction (depends totally on your Oncologic evaluation) Dr Oscar Porras will create a new breast as close to your natural breast as possible, this could be with breast implants or with an autologous flap, depending on your case. This procedure will not interfere with your oncologist treatment nor subsequent control of breast cancer. The surgical time for this procedure depends also on the oncological team but it ranges from 4 to 6 hrs. Hospitalization time 2 – 4 days.
If you’re a candidate for late reconstruction: It consists of placing a tissue expansion in the breast area to recruit skin to mimic the contralateral breast volume, after finishing the tissue expansion the skin will help cover the breast implant when it gets to be placed to create a natural breast. Further steps would be needed if you plan to reconstruct the nipple. A flap is designed also for this purpose, but nowadays a 3D tattoo is also recommended.
The surgical time for this procedure ranges from 1 to 2 hrs.
Expansion protocol 6 months – 1 year depending on the quality of skin.
Overall time for complete reconstruction 1 year.
Hospitalization time 2 days
Reverse expansion Breast Reconstruction
In selected cases a full breast reconstruction can be made with fat transfer, patients must not have radiotherapy, not smoke, and medium breast size. This technique uses the same steps as a normal late breast reconstruction with expander but after reaching the expansion goal you will need 4 to 6 sessions of fat transfer are needed and the expander will be deflated.
* After reaching your expansion goal a Breast implant can be place or in some cases an autologous flap reconstruction is required, in that case Dr Oscar Porras will advise you about the pros and cons of each type of Flap: TRAM, DIEP, SIEA, Latissimus Dorsi, SGAP, depending of the donor area (abdomen, back, gluteal or leg) going with you step by step in your reconstructive journey.
